ANDY GILL

1.QUALIFICATIONS?
In terms of music, I am totally unqualified. Untaught, except for a few lessons from my cousin and one or two friends. I have a degree in Fine Art from Leeds University, which is where a lot of my ideas about music came from.

2.CAREER HIGHLIGHTS?
There have been some great concerts with Gang Of Four – Roseland Ballroom in NYC, the US festival, Hammersmith Palais in London. Recording the 2nd album ‘Solid Gold’ and the 6th album ‘Shrinkwrapped’. Also this current album, ‘What Happens Next’. Also producing the ‘Red Hot Chilli Peppers’ and co-writing and producing the ‘Michael Hutchence’ album.

3.AMBITIONS?
I just want to continue to write great music and perform good concerts.

4.SONGS YOU WISH YOU HAD WRITTEN?
Waiting For My Man, Pale Blue Eyes and Sunday Morning by Velvet Underground. Tangled Up in Blue by Bob Dylan . Cant Hold My Liquor by Kanye West.

5.DESERT ISLAND DISCS?
Best of Muddy Waters and Blood On The Tracks by Bob Dylan.

6.FAVOURITE ARTISTS/BANDS OF ALL TIME?
James Brown, Hendrix, Velvet Underground, Bob Marley.

7.WHAT MUSIC ARE YOU LISTENING TO NOW?
The new ‘Wild Beasts’ album.

8.THE LAST BOOK YOU READ?
Moby Dick

9.HOBBIES?
Cooking, collecting wine.

10.VINYL, CASSETTE, CD, MP3, WEB STREAMING?
Streaming is a disaster for musicians – they get paid very, very little for the songwriting or the performances. Vinyl sounds great. Funny cassettes are back in fashion, still, sound about the same as MP3s.

11.INDIE MUSIC IN THE AGE OF THE INTERNET?
Very hard work and not well paid. . .

12.PERSONAL MOTTO?
Lets give it a go.

What Happens Next

gang of four - what happens hext

What Happens Next’, the Gang of Four’s thrilling and unsettling ninth album, is the successor to 2011’s acclaimed ‘Content’. Founding guitarist and songwriter Andy Gill has constructed a new Gang of Four for album: John “Gaoler” Sterrylarge,on vocals, Thomas McNieceon,on bass, Jonny Finnegan,on drums. Gill’s first album without singer Jon King, it is aware of Gang of Four’s past, but not beholden to it. ‘What Happens Next’ marks Gang of Four’s boldest, most self-interrogating album since their debut ‘Entertainment!’
