1.ΠΡΟΣΟΝΤΑ;
Δεν έχω επίσημα προσόντα. Προέρχομαι από μία στρατιωτική οικογένεια και πήγα σε 11 διαφορετικά σχολεία. Οταν ήμουν δεκαπέντα χρονών έφυγα από το τελευταίο μου σχολείο στο Λονδίνο, χωρίς να έχω δώσει εξετάσεις. Πήγα να δουλέψω και ποτέ δεν γύρισα στην επίσημη εκπαίδευση. Πάντα διαβάζω πολλά βιβλία. Είμαι αυτοδίδακτος στη μουσική και την λογοτεχνία.

2. ΣΗΜΑΝΤΙΚΕΣ ΣΤΙΓΜΕΣ ΣΤΗΝ ΚΑΡΙΕΡΑ ΣΟΥ;
Εχουν υπάρξει αρκετές. Η πρώτη μεγάλη ήταν όταν εντάχθηκα σε μία glam rock μπάντα στα 19 μου και ξεκινησα να παίζω σε συναυλίες. Μου άλλαξε την ζωή. Η επόμενη ήταν όταν πήρα ένα sound on sound κασετόφωνο και μερικά χρόνια μετά, το πρώτο μου Tascam Portastudio 144. Η ηχογράφηση στο σπίτι ήταν πάντα μία εμμονή μου και είναι ακόμα. Εκανα μερικούς από τους καλύτερους δίσκους μου στο σπίτι.

3.ΦΙΛΟΔΟΞΙΕΣ;
Να τελειώσω το γράψιμο ενός indie rock musical…ένα προσωπικό lo-fi musical. Να το γεμίσω με καλά τραγούδια και να έχω κάποιον να το ανεβάσει στη σκηνή. Αα… και δεν θα με πείραζε να έχω μία ΜΕΓΑΛΗ παγκόσμια επιτυχία με ένα δίσκο μου πριν πεθάνω.Κάτι το οποίο ίσως να ενοχλήσει πολύ τα συμβατικά στελέχη της μουσικής βιομηχανίας.

4. ΤΡΑΓΟΥΔΙΑ ΠΟΥ ΘΑ ΕΥΧΟΣΟΥΝ ΝΑ ΕΙΧΕΣ ΣΥΝΘΕΣΕΙ;
Υπάρχουν μάλλον πολλά. Αλλάζουν μέρα με τη μέρα. Εναν δίσκο που άκουσα το 1981 και μου άρεσε πραγματικά ήταν ένας σόλο δίσκος του Barry Andrews (πρώην μέλος στους XTC) το “Rossmore Road”. Ηταν σαν baroque punk αναμεμειγμένο με το Penny Lane.

5. DESERT ISLAND DISCS (ΔΙΣΚΟΙ ΓΙΑ ΕΝΑ ΕΡΗΜΙΚΟ ΝΗΣΙ);
Πάλι αυτό είναι δύσκολο, αλλά θα έλεγα τον ελληνικό δίσκο “Break” των Aphrodites Child. Πραγματικά εξαιρετικός δίσκος. Ισως και το “There’s a Place” των Beatles.

6. ΑΓΑΠΗΜΕΝΟΙ ΚΑΛΛΙΤΕΧΝΕΣ / ΓΚΡΟΥΠ;
The Beatles, Family, Pink Fairies, High Llamas, XTC, Smiths, The Who, The Kinks, The Move, Dusty Springfield, The Stones, Jake Thackray…τόσοι πολλοί καλλιτέχνες.

7. ΤΙ ΜΟΥΣΙΚΗ ΑΚΟΥΣ ΤΩΡΑ;

11. Η INDIE ΜΟΥΣΙΚΗ ΤΗΝ ΕΠΟΧΗ ΤΟΥ ΙΝΤΕΡΝΕΤ;
Το Διαδίκτυο είναι μία δικαίωση για μένα. Επειδή έμεινα μακρυά από την mainstream μουσική βιομηχανία και τον μουσικό Τύπο, πολλοί γύρω μου δεν γνώριζαν τι ακριβώς κάνω. Τώρα δεν μπορούν να πιστέψουν πόσο πολύ μουσική έχω κάνει.

12. ΠΡΟΣΩΠΙΚΟ ΑΠΟΦΘΕΓΜΑ ;
1) Εάν δεν κάνεις τίποτα – τίποτα δεν θα συμβεί.
2) Καμμία ενέργεια δεν πάει πραγματικά χαμένη, απλά επιστρέφει με διαφορετική μορφή.

In May of 1979, UK native Martin Newell was 26 years old and in transition. He’d just split up with his girlfriend and moved out of the Colchester house they’d shared for four years. A month later, Newell also stepped down as the singer for Gypp, a band he’d been in for three years. Though they had a great live reputation and a strong regional following, Newell, with some misgivings, felt their music was out-of-step with the times. That same year, he turned down the offer of a literature degree course at university as well. Why bother? He had a part-time washing-up job, a guitar and a room in a rambling, boho house. He could just tear the whole thing down and start again. And so he did.That summer, friend and recording engineer Dave Hoser heard some of Newell’s demos and offered to help record them on his 4-track equipment, dubbed “The Octopus Mobile.” With some of Newell’s former optimism and energy restored, he put together a new band: the then 23-year-old drummer Michael ‘Stix’ Natkanski, former Gypp bass player Tony Phillips and Braintree guitarist Malcolm Burch (a/k/a Max Volume). Calling themselves The Stray Trolleys, the music here predates Newell’s work as The Cleaners from Venus and the bulk of the sessions on their sole album, Barricades and Angels, were recorded at Octopus Studios during spring and summer of 1980. Amazingly, although they had little to no rehearsals, all backing tracks were recorded fairly quickly and everyone got on well, especially in the pub afterwards.

So, what’s the story here? A few youngish unknowns got together in a little home-built country studio and recorded a handful of songs for an album that eventually emerged on a DIY cassette? They weren’t perfect, but there is something very special about this collection. The music captures a time. Just listen.
